Would you like to make a duplicate of a ring or necklace that you own, or have it recreated in an entirely different material or colour? Remaking jewellery can be easily done with silicone mould making. In fact, silicone mould making is the easiest way to recreate multiple pieces of identical jewellery. It’s also a fun and personalized way to gift something really sentimental and unique to someone special. The most effective way to mass-produce or duplicate a piece of jewelry is through 2 ingredient silicone moulds. If you’re eager to learn more about how jewellery makers use this process to create stunning works of wearable art, read all about it, and how to do it yourself, right here.

Creating Silicone Putty with Two Key Ingredients

With silicone, you can quickly make a mould of anything solid in a matter of minutes. All you need is a catalyst and the silicone. The measuring ratio should be 1:10 by weight. When you mix these two ingredients together (this should take approximately four minutes), a silicone putty will start to form and solidify. During the mixing process, it is critical to vacuum the mix in order to get rid of any gas bubbles. The mixing process should take a total of only 8 minutes if done properly. To make the mold, the putty mix is then transferred to a frame with plastic sides. The mixture is then cured for 18 hours, at 25°C or for 90 – 120 minutes at 66°C. Once finished and solidified, you will be able to cut the mould and retrieve the initial piece of jewellery.

Jewellery Casting

To make a base metal for the jewellery piece, the metal gets melted until it’s hot enough that it won’t solidify before it’s put into the mould. Then it gets poured into the mould and is left to set for around 15 to 20 minutes. As soon as the cast has set and is cool to the touch, it’s taken out of the mould. To finish it off, the cast gets filed down it to polish and buff up the surface.

Range of Use

Silicone mould making comes in handy when you want to make a precious metal version of a base metal piece. It’s also ideal if you want to make a second or third copy of your favourite necklace to give to your friends or children as keepsakes.

Give Something Truly Sentimental

With a simple and customizable process, you can recreate almost any of your favourite pieces in new materials and colours (if you’re looking to duplicate a ring, you have the option to resize afterward too!). Whether it’s for your BFF, your kids, spouse or parent, silicone mould making lets you give a truly personalized and sentimental gift that will be cherished for a lifetime.

DIY or Not

What’s great about this process is that it can be done as a fun DIY creative project since it’s relatively simple to do. However, if you don’t have the time or the right tools and materials, it might be best to leave it to the professionals. With an artistic eye and years of experience, professional jewellers know what they’re doing and can ensure that what you’re envisioning is what you actually get.
